Accountability

I just returned home from a 9-day leadership conference in Cancun, Mexico.  It was absolutely incredible.  The information and experience that I had there has already impacted my work with clients.  I’ll be sharing several tips from the conference with you in the upcoming months!

Leaders frequently struggle with getting their team members to be accountable.  However, if we want to create accountability with our teams, we have to start with ourselves first and reflect on how we are showing up as leaders.  Are we being accountable as leaders?  Or are we asking our team members to “do as I say, not as I do?”

One simple step you can take today is to begin role-modeling the actions you want your team members to take and communicating your expectations with your team, for example: Showing up to meetings on time, refraining from checking smart phones or texting during meetings, not having side bar conversations during meetings and sharing your expectations in terms of time frame for returning phone calls and emails from customers and team members.

Get clear on your expectations, communicate those expectations to your team and have group accountability conversations when your team fails to adhere to those expectations.

And last but not least – be a leader who walks your talk and adheres to the expectations you have set for others.  Because after all – as the leader, you set the tone for accountability for your entire organization!
